Can I contact people who formly worked in my position to ask about their experiences during their tenure? I was put on a PIP, and I'm trying to figure out my best course of action.
Today, I was put on a Performance Improvement Plan. I am considering my options, but I don't want to make any rash decisions.
First, I am not in this job for the money. I work part time doing community outreach. I started my position hopeful to do meaningful work in my community. Needless to say, I am pretty disappointed. This is also my first job out of college. My first year was good, but my performance has declined over the past six months. In the last year, I noticed some red flags.
The first red flag for me was during my interview. One of my soon to be supervisors saw that I was interested in attending graduate school and said "I noticed you put that you wanted to attend graduate school. We don't want somebody who is going to only work here for a year and then leave. How soon do you plan to attend?" I didn't see the question as a problem, because I thought of course they don't want someone to leave after a year.
Once I accepted the position, they give me a jump drive which functions as their "database" with information that I need to do my job. That's when I started to find cover letters and resignation letters from former employees who worked in my position. I found one resignation letter on the jump drive and another one in the paper files. I also found an offer letter.
I started to piece together the dates using the letters, and I found that all the employees in my position left within a year and a half. Two left after less than one year. I thought it was due to low pay and bad hours (only 28 hours). Additionally, one of my supervisors made small comments about the last person in my position dropping the ball on one of our community events and things like that. In my first week, one of my coworkers asked if I was enjoying the job, and I said yes. She responded, "Just wait for the blow up." I was shocked. I had no idea what she meant.
Currently, it appears that I am facing the same issue as the last guy. It's just been eating at me. Is there a pattern? If so, what is the cause? Did these people have similar issues as me?
My question is should I contact these people and ask them about their experiences during their tenure? I have their names, and I've found them on LinkedIn and Facebook. I do not recall seeing anything about contacting old employees in our office policy. Or should I just cut my losses and quit? My manager wants me to leave comments on my evaluations, but I'm not sure. Are these red flags or am I being crazy?
