Worked with a large company for 10 years, had several different managers in those years, all rating my performance evaluations as exceptional (including my last manager). I was a "top performer" in my div as told to me by div leadership (bosses boss).-Last Manager during my last 1.5 years with company was toxic and awkward, I did a lot of work for him, helped him with HIS role and went above and beyond, even rated me a high performer on my last evaluation. Although the manager was clearly unqualified (even by his own admission) I worked with him, never spoke poorly of him and legitimately did my work as needed. Again, my last evaluation with the company was with this manager, which he rated me as a highly performing.
- Background context: Last two years I had become increasingly frustrated with being passed over and the toxic work conditions of the site. After giving it my all for 10 years and chasing the carrot, I had decided that this would be my last year wit the company. Due to excessive severance package benefits and tuition repayment forgiveness, I was open with my manager about not feeling like the company was a proper fit any longer and made the case that it would be beneficial for the company to replace me (reduction in force) with a lower level position. I made it clear on more than one conversation that this is what I was wanting, a clean, mutual exit from the company, but as a RIF and not resignation. Friday before my resignation I contacted my manager and I request again to be RIFFEd, that again it would be best for everyone, especially the company and team, and I get no response back. The next business day, my manager puts me on a performance probation evaluation plan, where I must complete X objectives by x time or I will be terminated (fired). Manager tells me repeatedly "we're not going to RIF you, either decide to stay or go".
Decided that evening that it was time to just resign as I should have earlier (lesson learned, tuition repayment fees were $10-15,000 which would have been forgiven if I would have been RIFfed versus resigning, but at this point I was prepared to just pay it to get out and move on) Spoke with my manager the morning of submitting my 2 week notice, Manager was understanding that I was wanting to finish my school and understood that things werent working out with the culture of the company and my ambitions (we had discussed this over the last 1.5 several, several times). We have friendly conversation for about a hour and I asked him what the next steps were, to which he replied that he didnt know until he talked with HR but would let me know. I said great, just let me know what I need to do in the next 2 week so that I can prepare my ext (training or anything else that I may need to do to help transition out). Everything seemed professional and I felt good that I was surely leaving on a positive note.
Worked through the morning as usual and took lunch at noon, upon returning from lunch manager asked to see me in the office. We go into his office and he tells me that in order to protect employee morale (I did inform my co workers that I had resigned, but didnt bad mouth the company or manager) he was going to have me leave immediately instead. I asked him what does that mean, like walking me out? He "Yeah, you're going to pack your shit and I'm going to walk you out" and then asked me if I had a company laptop, to which I did and said yes. Manager told me to have the laptop returned by Friday to which I said no problem. Manager then watches me as I pack my desk and escorts me out (the entire time I remained professional and courtesy to everyone wishing everyone goodluck). Manager turns and said " Sorry about that, I didnt really have a choice" I said Oh, well I thought you said it was your choice? He replies, "oh, yeaah.. well.. ugh it's complicated" and that was it we wished each other goodluck.
-Former co-workers say that after he returned from walking me out he asked if there was anyone else that would like to leave to which they became defensive, which resulted to him having 1on1 meetings with the staff about it. I am told the manager tried to spin it that "I was let go for performance" which they shot back that they knew I had resigned as I informed them the day prior to doing it.
Fast forward a year later. I completed my degree and am now looking for employment. Considering how my last day played out with him being perfectly accepting and normal about my resignation to walking me out, I wasn't too sure if I should list this manager as a reference for a potential job that I am interviewing for. I do not want to lie or omit it if I am asked to provide my last manager as a reference, so I decided to have a third party conduct a reference check with my former manager.
Reference check indicates that the manager gave me a negative review, stating that "although I was probably technically eligible to be rehired with the company, he himself would have doubts about rehiring me" and that he "did not want to elaborate further as hes no longer in that position" (im not surprised to hear that) also said that "I'm not sure why he left, he just gave a 2 weeks notice and that was it, I assumed he got another job"
I'm surprised but I'm not, this particular manager was known to be problematic among the staff, especially considering his management skill sets were severely lacking, so am I surprised that he would ice me after securing wins under him, no, not really, that's one of the many reasons why I left, but then again, considering how I was always candid and upfront with him, and genuinely did my job (which he received credit multiple times from some major successful projects that I planned and executed) even though he knew I wasn't happy being there, I dont think I deserve to be shot down with a bad reference... Either way, it is what it is, I still know that I have stellar reviews with that company, however a reference check is going to ask for my last manager, not performance reviews.
Should I leave this manager off my reference and contact one of my other former managers with this company?
What should I say if I'm asked to list my last manager with the company?
