I've been unemployed for about six months now. I've been fortunate that there really hasn't been a week that's gone by where I haven't had at least a phone interview, and it's given me hope that something will come along soon, but so far, there haven't been any offers. My end goal is obviously to find a full-time job, yet I've applied to jobs that are temporary/contract-based as well. They're proving to be just as difficult to get hired for.
I'm starting to wonder if I should be doing freelance work remotely in the meantime. Sometimes interviewees ask me what I've been doing since my last job was eliminated, and I almost want to be like, "Duh, what do you think I've been doing? I've been putting all my effort into trying to get a new full-time job," but I also think they expect me to say that I've been freelancing.
The thing is, I've looked at all those sites where remote freelance jobs in my field are posted, and most jobs are looking for people to do work for well below the industry standard and I'm not sure how reliable these places are. I did some freelancing work in the past, and what I remember is that chasing down payments is always an issue no matter how stable or reputable a company is, and I really don't want to deal with that again.
Right now, it's not like I'm scraping for money and my resume is solid with a decade+ of experience. Is it worth the time at this stage, or should I continue focusing my efforts on the greater objective in getting a full-time job?
