I have been working at a manufacturing plant for the past month making $15 an hour (Which is decent in my area). I also have been studying for an A.S. in Computer Information Systems. I have been programming on the side and applied to a java position. I was interviewed on Monday and, while I didn't get the position, the hiring manager said, "I can see you as a "processor". You know the basics of programming, just need practice. We will keep your resume in case things change."
I thought that was it but today I got a call from the recruiter saying that they want to start me off learning the production side of the job then possibly start working on simple coding projects.
However, the job will start at around $10.50 to $12 an hour. And I am already making $15 plus overtime.
I know that this could be a gateway to a new opportunity but I like my current job. They offer tuition reimbursement and I get to learn welding, machining, painting, etc.
Should I leave my current position with good benefits over a lower-payed job but possible tech role? I have been thinking about negotiating with the new company, perhaps asking them to work a couple of days a week instead of full time (That way I can keep my current job and work the afternoons).
TLDR: Got a good job paying $15 with free college paid for. A company wants to hire me with the potential to teach me programming, but will start around $10. What should I do?
