Girlfriend offered Second Shift (wasn't part of the posting) but has a kid

I'm looking for some advice on behalf on my girlfriend. A little backstory on her, she is 34 and is a single mom to a 7 year old. She previously worked in Journalism but after being laid off (again) she has been working some odd jobs like serving, court reporting, etc. to make ends meet. She really wants to get on something more stable, meaning hours as well.

Through a friend she applied for a position at some sort of creative/marketing company and she just found out that she recieved an offer...her excitement went from a 10 to a 1 when during the conversation the person from HR suggested that it might require working "second shift". When pushed a little further, it sounds like the intent is for this position to be a second shift to help handle a new west coast client.

I told her that it's a negotiation and that there's still hope to make it work, perhaps if she can negotiate doing second shift a few times a week if she can work from home or something. Does anyone else have any advice on the situation? Second shift wasn't indicated in the posting or the interview and while she really wants to take the offer, she can't as she has a child. Thanks in advance.
