Following up after an interview

I was recently laid off after 14 years of employment with the same company, which was right out of college. So I went on my first interview a little over a week ago. I thought it went well, and they told me I should hear something in about a week. I have not yet heard anything

What would be my best plan of action to follow up with them? Do I just email them and ask for status? Should it be a formal or informal?

And basically any other tips would help. Located in the US
