Unlimited PTO - how's that working out for you?

I started a job with a startup about 3 months ago and one of the 'perks' they offer is Unlimited PTO. Sounds good in theory, but I'm feeling a little apprehensive after my experience last week. I put in a request for the week of Thanksgiving, which was approved by my manager, and let everyone know that I would be out of the office that week. I handle customer support tickets and am currently the only one doing so. I had someone in the office backing me up for the days we were open (M-W) and went on my merry way.

Starting SUNDAY, I get bombarded with emails and text messages about how all these urgent things needed to happen. 4 internal phone calls on Monday, I finally decided to just suck it up and do what they needed, since it was a quick thing, and politely let them know again that I was out of town visiting family and really not available to work. Was told 'no worries, enjoy' and again went on my merry way.

Tuesday I get 8 text messages in a row and 3 emails asking me to do the same thing I had done on Monday, and ignored them.

Monday I got back to the office and find out that they had someone else do what 'urgently' needed to be done, and it got totally fucked up and now I'm spending my time trying to figure out how to fix it.

I guess I'm part ranting, part asking if startups all suck like this, and if unlimited PTO is really a ruse and if so, how do I put my foot down? I am taking 2 weeks off for Christmas (most of our office is doing the same) and I'm already freaking out.
