Need Strategy Advice! I'm being brought back for an onsite after being told "we're not hiring"

I had an onsite interview last week, but one member of the team wasn't able to meet with me. I felt like the interview went pretty well - not perfect but well. At the end I asked "what next" and they said that they're patient (if I wanted to do a PhD) and that the team isn't hiring, although the said they've been looking for someone for the past year and a half. I have another onsite to meet the other team member next week and so I need some advice for how to turn the ambivalence into a "yeah we want you!".
