Is it just protocol for potential employers to "ghost" ya after 1 email??

Over the years I've gotten plenty of "no thank you" emails after an application or interview. It sucks, but I always reply politely "Thank you for your time blah blah".

To try to keep the conversation open, I include something like "Please keep me in mind for future blah blah" or "If there is something I could do to stand out more as a candidate please let me know" or even more directly "What could I have done differently to stand out more to you as a candidate?" (These are all smaller companies, probably 5 - 50 employees, nothing mega. And I'm sincerely wanting feedback of how I can improve.)

I've never gotten any reply to any of these. Is that just protocol for the hiring process??

Fast forward to recently, there's a little operation of 2 people doing work in my field. I heard (friend of a friend) that 1 was leaving, so I emailed the other guy. He asked for my resume and some examples of projects, and then asked for an interview. It went well I thought, the whole process was more casual than formal for sure.

A week later I got the "selected another candidate" email. I responded "please keep me in mind in the future as you grow" and asked (maybe too forward) "Is there something I could have done differently?"

No response.

Two weeks later I do another hefty revamp of my resume. To try to keep a conversation going I sent the resume to him and said "I've made some changes to better reflect my skills and experience, please keep it on hand for potential opportunities..."

Nothing.

So again, is this just protocol for employers to "ghost" ya once you're not selected?? I kinda feel like it's a dick move. Or is there some unwritten rule they're "supposed" to act this way?
