Internship Abroad- Payment Questions and General Advice (US Citizen going to Germany)

Hello,

I just received an offer letter to intern abroad with a German company that I have been pursuing for a while now. I interned with a branch outside Chicago last year. This year, I decided to attempt to work at their headquarters in Germany. The offer letter contained a few details that I would like to debate/talk about with HR - however, I have never had to negotiate and do not feel like I have much leverage being an intern and all. Here's the current info:

  • 40 hours per week (7 hours daily + one hour of lunchbreak)
  • Flexible, up to 10 hours a day (allows for 4 day weeks)
  • With a 6 months internship, you will get 10 free days for holiday. (I work 3 months - presuming this means 5 days free)
  • The compensation will be 735 € / month pre-tax
  • In addition, you will get 50% on the meals in our company restaurant

While there are a few nice perks, what I need advice on is the pay. Compared to what the company paid me last year, it is nothing (then: $15/hr., now: $5.25/hr). Also, have many additional costs for this internship (housing, travel, food) - all things I did not pay for last summer). I have researched and the compensation they provide is very standard for German internships, but I also found that internships tend to be part of German curriculum

For anyone with experience here- is there any point negotiating with HR about a raise?

How do I negotiate this in a way that does not offend but also is strong?

Thank you for your advice, and I am happy to add details as needed.

TL;DR: Interning abroad: Would take a 66% pay cut compared to last year and have increased expenses. Do I have the ability to negotiate pay as an intern? How do I go into this conversation?
