Contract job ended today, applying to others. What to say in cover letters/interviews?

Hey all, political comms person here who just wrapped up a 6 month contract like, today. I am applying vigorously to other jobs, but have never been in this situation before, and am unsure how to explain the situation in my applications/interviews.

Do I just say "I've just wrapped up XYZ contract doing XY" or do I need to be explaining what I'm doing RIGHT NOW? I ask because I'm trying to get to the point where I'm consulting in between job gaps, but i don't have any clients right now, so I'm not sure what to say about my situation other than I'm done with a contract (very successful, with references) and want to find something FT???
