Long story short, was working thru a temp agency for an international bank for approx. 10 months and got laid off due to bank's decision (operation costs). I've been on unemployment since and am having trouble finding work. After being laid off the temp agency tried to place me with another job but I didn't take it because it wasn't the right fit (less pay, further travel, work didn't align w/ my career interests). I've had no further talks w/ that specific agency, and while others exist in the area I have not signed up with them (due to terrible reviews, lack of career-oriented work, etc.).
Here are some details:
- Have a BA in Intelligence Studies
- Resume & Cover Letter was tweaked by NYS Unemployment Counselor
- Created an Indeed profile to do easy applying
- Updated LinkedIn profile (I don't see the sense in using it because now it seems like a Facebook for "professional" use w/ bloat and articles and no active leads)
- Job area (WNY) doesn't seem (to me atleast) to have what I'm looking for (Compliance, Investigations, Consulting, Strategy, etc.)
- Attempted to take Civil Service tests but none pertaining to me are listed
Basically, I'm stuck at this point. I don't have too many contacts in high places that can get me a job and I've been applying directly to the banks in my area but have not heard back. I've applied elsewhere too (Insurance companies, Universities, Health Care Offices, etc.) but it's the same result. I've had about 4 interviews out of approximately 50 applications but those didn't pan out (I've had phone, in person & even speaking to a camera that recorded my responses!).
I've thought about this for awhile and I think that one of my downfalls is that I'm tired of "playing the game". For example, in interviews I made it a point to state that if the employer wants someone who will show up on time all the time and will do what they want then they need to look no further. I've also made mention that I focus on process improvement (AKA, minimize headaches). I don't think I come off as disrespectful in interviews but I do speak firmly about my work ethic and what it is I want in a job. Just being tired of job hunting in an area that isn't netting me any good results is contributing to those thoughts, I think.
I still have the unemployment money coming in but I don't want to hit the 6 month mark and be w/o money and a job. So, if you have any advice for me I'll gladly listen. If you need more information, just ask and I'll answer what I can.
