I posted a variation of this on r/personalfinance but I think it’s a better fit for this sub. All input appreciated!

I am trying to determine if making a job switch makes any sense whatsoever, or if I should stay put.
A new temp-to-permanent position has come up that is a fabulous opportunity. It would look good on my resume (better title, opens more doors) and I would gain new skills that simply would not happen at my current job. My current office is chronically understaffed and myself along with one other in this position are expected to absorb the workload indefinitely. Managers say that there are no qualified applicants. No solutions on the horizon.
New job is in a new sector, I have reason to believe that there is a 90% chance it goes to permanent around March. In the meantime, I would be making approximately $30/hour with no benefits. I’d be working 35 hours a week. My math says that this is going to be disastrous to my wallet (in the short term) for many, many reasons.
1) public transportation is not covered. That’s $200 right off the top. 2) no health benefits until permanent. I’d have to get something in the exchange. The cheapest I could find from Kaiser would be $248 per month. 3) I’m above the %-above the poverty threshold for Obamacare, so I’d be looking at $375+ per month.
I feel this could open up potential for new opportunities having a better job title. I would meet a few new people. The pressure would be very low in the short term (basically until the next important deadline in March)
But I need to weigh the impact of having to find my own health insurance (this is non negotiable) and pay for my own public transportation in the next 4 months.
How is this situation sounding? A realist would say longer commute = not good. I’m not sure what to think. It’s the same transit line, just longer. Anyway, I’ll break down the stats below:
Current Job stats:
- $57k per year plus health benefits
- Public transportation covered ($200 per month)
- 35-40 minute commute
- Understaffed for the foreseeable future
- No prospects to advance
Potential Job stats:
- $30 per hour as a temp, until March, then $65k
- Public transportation not covered
- 18 minutes added to commute each way = 36 more minutes per day (same route, just 4 stops more on public transport)
- Opportunity to learn new skills
- Instant improvement in job title
- own office
- Potential for telecommute in future (uncertain)
