Need help understanding and asking for "Personal Days" (Canada)

Hi there,

I recently started a job for a large company back in August. My probation finished in November and I've accrued plenty of paid time off that I need to use by year-end or lose it. (We also apparently have paid sick days as well but those are self-explanatory I guess). 7.5 of the days are vacation days, which I have booked for middle of December. 2 more accrued days are "Personal days". Vacation days are quite self-explanatory as well but I'm not sure exactly what "Personal days" are used for.

I've been getting kind of mixed messages from colleagues/supervisors and it seems very "hush hush" (ie. a supervisor told me something and then she adds "But you didn't hear that from me")

I've heard anything from "You can book it off and managers aren't supposed to ask the reason because its personal" to "You can't book it to extend vacation day" to "You CAN book it to extend vacation day" to "Just make an excuse to use it"

Now if I had an actual doctors appointment or a real legitimate reason to take the day off, I wouldn't really hesitate to ask, but really if I have paid time off, I just want to take it off and just relax at home before it disappears by year end, and I don't really want to make up an excuse to take it off.

I already sent a request to my manager to take a day off this week, but for my second one, I'm pretty hesitate/scared to ask to take a second one a week from now.

Would it be a good idea to say.. contact the HR department for clarification on the use of personal days or is that a bad idea? I've never had personal days at my old job, and as a new person, its scary/difficult conversation to have to ask managers about questions about time off.
