For those who got a job in your field during the last recession, how were you able to land that position?

The larger situation: the prediction of a recession hitting by 2020.

My situation: I am starting work on a one-year contract very soon. My field is geographic information systems + urban planning, and I have ~2 years experience in GIS. I live in Texas. So my field isn't directly affected by things like tariffs, but could be affected if a slowdown affects other areas of the economy.

My concern: Of not being able to find a job when the contract ends in late 2019, similar to what many people experienced between 2008 and 2010 during the Great Recession.

My plan is, during the job or on the side, improve skills used for GIS. This includes python, GPS data collection, web mapping, SQL, and other tools useful for GIS. I also have a large number of contacts that have helped me find work. I plan on starting the next job search when I have ~5 months left on the contract so I can potentially get an offer before the contract position expires. A public sector position is preferable as they are more stable than private companies. I am willing to relocate for a new job.

That's my plan, but I'd like to hear from those who were in the workforce during the 2008 recession. Were you able to hold onto your job? If you were laid off, how/when did you find another job in your field?
