Was offered the position of Assistant Manager conditionally? I feel bait and switched, what should I do?
Hey, so I'm currently an assistant manager of a small store, I work part time. I'm not really making enough and the company isn't going to give me anything more, this is a dead end job. So I decided to branch out and find a full time assistant management job.
I applied to be an assistant manager at my local Gamestop for full time, $12 hourly (among many other places). I got a call back and an interview. I nailed the interview, which was encouraging. But then, they told me that the position wasn't open due to complications? But they had sales associate, part time for $8.00 hourly available ASAP and would love for me to start. I declined because I am looking for something full time and in management. They wanted me to work 10 - 15 hours a week. I've been an assist. manager for a year now and I usually work 20 - 30 hours, I'm not going to leave my current assist.manager position for $8 hourly when I'm making $12 and more hours. Even though that's not enough. I live in an expensive city.
I left. A couple days later the hiring manager calls me back and says the full time, assistant management position is open and invites me to re-apply online for "paperwork". He asked me to come by for another interview. Weird, but I agree. I'm getting excited, my wife is excited. We have stuff to catch up on financially.
Thirty minutes before my interview while I'm on my way to the place, the guy calls me and tells me that I'm hired NOT as assistant manager, but as the sales associate position "for now" at $8.00 hourly for 10 - 15 hours a week "until Friday" when the district manager comes in. I explain I can't do that, I'm still working at my old job and have shifts until Friday. I explain I'd like to give my current workplace a bit of a notice to not burn bridges, but I refused the sales associate position because that's not what I applied for. He didn't listen.
He said it was a "trial period" for the assistant manager position and on Friday, the district manager would determine if I was hired for the management role after closing based on how I do. This confused me because I have more than what they're requiring in terms of experience and I feel like it would be silly to put me through a "trial period". I'm not inexperienced. I've never been through anything like this for a position. So he ignores my declining, tells me he's emailing me the i9 paperwork and that I start tomorrow and hangs up.
So, I'm pretty sure they're trying to string me along, aren't they? It feels like a bait and switch. I don't understand why I would be hired for something I'm overqualified for to put through a trial period? If they're skeptical of my credentials, wouldn't they just call my current boss and ask her some questions? She said she hasn't received a call from them and she's also kind of pissed that they'd demand me over there ASAP. We're on very good terms, she knows I'm looking for full time and is trying to help me. But she also asked that I don't leave her hanging, which is understandable. I owe her that much as a friend. Our company won't give me full time and she can't force them to, it sucks. We both hate corporate. That's another story.
I'm mad, honestly. I feel like he wasn't listening to me. What should I do when I call him tomorrow? I feel like telling him this is the worst way to try and find associates and that his hiring process is extremely unprofessional. This isn't how we do it when we hire people, I've hired people before for my current workplace. A part of me wants to fight for that full time, $12 hourly management position. A part of me wants to see what will happen...? But I don't want to waste my time for an empty promise. I didn't accept the offer so how can he expect me to show up tomorrow? It was just kind of thrust on me. Should I see how it goes? Or should I give him a piece of my mind and keep going?
My job search has been very frustrating and fruitless for the past few months. I'm getting anxious about it. I just want to work full-time at one place. I have a year of assistant management on my resume and I've got six years in sales as a sale's associate. I don't think I have to "prove" I'm cut out for this.
