I’m a young professional currently working in the transportation industry. I enjoy my job & everyone I work with, however there are some serious issues that are making me question how much longer I can stay at this company.
The two main issues are-pay and time off. I’ve only been working here for 8 months now so I know that’s not a terribly long time. My position is so important to the company that my manager frequently tells me that I can never take a day off because she wouldn’t be able to survive without me. She’s incredibly incompetent and does nothing all day, but that’s a story for another day.
I have been praised by many of the executives for the accuracy in my work and they have been very pleased with everything I have brought to the table. I have pretty much completely changed the procedures in my department in addition to cutting costs by 20% and increasing revenue by $800,000 since I’ve been here.
I’m being paid 650 a week before taxes, which comes out to be about $450 after taxes. I am a salaried employee. I’ve looked at switching companies and found that I am grossly underpaid compared to what similar companies pay. I don’t have much opportunity for growth unless I want to switch departments, but there’s no real upward mobility.
My second issue is time off. Each year, all employees only receive 3 days off. That is sick and vacation in one. We don’t get Christmas Eve off, the day after thanksgiving, or the day after Christmas off. When I’ve mentioned how this is so wrong to other coworkers they say something to the effect of “welcome to the real world sweetie. No company just gives you days off for no reason.” What.the.actual.fuck.
We are expected to work 40+ hours a week, without overtime pay, and then also get no days off. It’s ridiculous. My father is dying and I was hoping to be able to spend Christmas Eve with him this year, but apparently I’ll be working. And I can’t request it off because I’m out of days already due to a severe illness I caught (because people come to work sick and I have a suppressed immune system).
I’m at a loss for what to do. I feel like a slave and it’s really starting to affect my work and mental health. Has anyone been through a similar situation? If so, how did you handle it? Or does anyone have advice for what to do?
