Good day everyone,
I am a Master 'Banking & Finance' student from the Netherlands (background: General Economics, since two years a specialisation on Finance/Banking). I am doing a Workshop in Python/MySQL the upcoming 8 weeks and in the third period I will do a course named Algorithm in Finance which explores Python/MySQL further. Next to that, I try to do my Thesis (Event Study) with R so I have prior knowledge with that program as well. We usually use Stata but I noticed that the program does not get used as much in the Working Field.
I was curious with my background as a Financial student, with a more broad perspective on the financial markets than developing models, has a shot at becoming a Quantitative Analyst/Researcher/Trader (at a Bank or Investment Firm). I don't study Econometrics and the main difference between my study and Econometrics is that I learn more about Asset Pricing and Risk Management (but also have Empirical Economics & Econometrics courses but at a more simple level than a Econometric student) than the Data Science. Much of my peers would aim at becoming part of a M&A team or a Portfolio Manager.
Because I have interests in the Quantitative Field I take additional courses but I am curious if that one year of doing coding will prove to be worth it for a chance as a Quant or if this is out of my area without much additional study and additional courses. I know the job market is asking a lot for people that have these skills which is, next to my genuine interest, one of the reasons I decided to take additional courses.
If I don't quality, could someone suggest what opportunities (role/function) someone with my background in Finance + knowledge of Data Science has in the job market? I can understand that most people here are from the US and that the market could be different but then some general pointers would really help me out.
I am going to approach companies and such but to hear hands-on experience from actual Quants/Traders might be more of a help to me than only talking to Recruiters who have an incentive to 'sell' me their Traineeship/Internship.
PS: I do not have knowledge of C++, JAVA and Matlab. This is a disadvantage but I can not combine this as well without skipping sleep altogether.
