A firm got back to me after a few months

Back in July I had met an older gentleman at a volunteer event. I shared that I was an accounting student which led me to acquiring a possible internship with his son who’s a partner at a firm. At the time upon meeting the dad, the son wasn’t in need of any help at his office. Until now, 4 months later I get an email from the son, whom I never had any contact before ( dad passed along my contact info ), he mentions about an internship opportunity for the upcoming tax season I suppose. He asks if I’m interested, to reply to his email with a resume enclosed.

Do I follow up with a cover email letter along with it? Or not necessary? It’s the weekend now should I send it asap or wait until Monday morning to send my resume?
