Does Google ever hire externally for leadership roles?

Im currently a senior director (non-engineering) and I’ve seen a few Director level jobs open up at Google in my area.

At first glance, Google’s Director level requirements are higher than my current role. I have about 5 years less experience than they ask for, and no advanced degree. Now, with that said, I have a hell of a resume and impressive side projects in lieu of a masters.

However, the responsibilities and job functions listed in the job description are nearly identical to what I do today, and I have experience in all of those areas.

Im fairly confident that my experience and portfolio would justify me applying for one of these jobs. But does Google ever hire externally at the Director level? My online research suggests it’s rare. Also, Looking at their Director salaries, it’s about 5x more than I currently make as a SENIOR Director right now.

Maybe this is my impostor syndrome talking, but would I be even remotely justified in trying to get this kind of job at Google? Does anyone have experience interviewing or working at leadership levels at Google?

I’ll probably apply regardless but I’m trying to get a better idea of what ‘Director’ at Google really means.
