Should I continue a job application if it asks for my social security number?

I am in the middle of filling out a job application and it asks for my social security number. I "have" to put in order to submit my application.

I'm not sure how I feel about putting my social security number on the actual application. I'd understand if it was after I got the job, but just for an application? Ehh, I'm not too sure.

I've filled out job applications before and out of all the applications I have filled out, I only had to provide my social security number once and it was for an i9 form. I atleast knew what it was for.

Before I got to the application, I signed a form regarding the fair credit reporting act, and perhaps that's why my social security number is being asked for?
