So I work at a small political tech start-up, and I've been here since June. I was living abroad last year, and I've been very, very lucky to have a job at all now that I'm back home with everything going on. I realize that for sure, but I can't keep working like this or I'm going to end up quitting.
The company has a crunchy neo-managerial type atmosphere where we all work from home, you can curse in meetings, you've got and your Slack GIFs, and your boss is your friend. I feel like the structure has really sucked me in in a sort of emotionally manipulative way (this may be too far), and I work far too much for what I'm paid.
Since we work with candidates and PACs, the election was naturally very busy. I was working a minimum of 12 hours a day, but I was sold on the idea that we were making a difference for people running (by scamming old people out of money through ads). But since the election ended, I've been given more and more responsibility without a commensurate payrise, and my hours have stayed ridiculously high. I work constantly, and it's all in the name of helping a "friend" out. It's not just me, it's the entire company ethos.
I don't want to be "friends" with any of my coworkers. I just want to work reasonable hours and not have to talk about The Bachelor with a bunch of people in a Google Meeting before our election bonus is turned into 5 extra vacation days.
Is there any going back at this point? I made a mistake by taking on this much work, and I really can't do it anymore. I don't want this to be my life tbh.
