Has the job search process always been like this?

I am a recent college graduate trying to enter the job market, and I am extremely curious about what job searching looked like post-2008/ pre COVID. It's quite ironic because most of the news I have been reading as of late attempts to paint the stock market in a positive light and by extension, job outlook. However, this seems pretty misleading to me because while I can find numerous job postings for positions not requiring further schooling, the same cannot be said for jobs that require specialized skill sets and pay more than minimum wage. They are quite literally non-existent in my area.

Most of the people I know appear to be in the same boat- a lot of us are just living with our parents until we can find a stable career that will pay the rent/allow us to clothe and feed ourselves. Frankly, it appears as though the stock market is not depicting reality for the majority of Americans, so I wish that authoritative media sources and personnel would stop acting as it does.

On top of the pandemic situation, older folks are staying in the market (such as my 55-year-old father who doesn't see retirement in his future) leaving less room for people like me. Also, tons of work is getting outsourced because employers can get work for an extraordinarily cheap price. And it seems like my STEM college degree I went 9K into debt for is ostensibly as valuable as a high school diploma at this point.

It just seems like a clusterfuck of things making finding a position difficult for me, and I feel like I am not the only one with these thoughts. I don't know if I am just unfortunate to be graduating at this time or if the job search process has always been arduous
