Would it be inappropriate to ask why I am making considerably less than people in the same role as me elsewhere?
I am the Director of Sales at a hotel. I have been there a little over 2 years and have been very successful. Pre pandemic, I increased revenue in every way and since the pandemic I have been the only one on the sales team as we eliminated my sales managers position. We are a 3 year old property and top in our market by far.
Prior to this, I was a sales manager at a hotel just around the corner. It was an awful hotel and my time there was not fun. They went through a 10 million dollar renovation that I was hopeful would make things better but they somehow got worse. I knew I had to get out and was so glad when I did.
My current salary is 52,000 plus commissions and as I mentioned, I am the only one on the sales staff. Today I got a message from a former colleague, letting me know that the Director of Sales role at my old hotel was open and asking if I could put in a good word for her. I decided to look up the position and the starting salary is $65,000 and there is a bonus structure as well. I felt like I was punched in the gut. We outperform this hotel in every metric and the fact that I am making that much less makes me very angry. On top of that, the other hotel has 2 other people on the sales team.
I know that now is not the time to ask for a raise but I think I am at least owed an explanation as to why the huge discrepancy? It may just be the shock of it but I have struggled with being undervalued my entire career and it’s starting to affect my psyche. Would I be out of line to go to my manager with this?
