Worked four hours unpaid as a 'trial shift' and was rejected... should I bother chasing the business up?
Hi all,
Basically what happened was, a few weeks ago, I went into a café for an 'interview'. However I got there and the interviewer/boss, without giving me a chance to ask questions, basically went "I'm putting you on the floor. Good luck".
I'm like huh, ok, but I go along with it, thinking she'll have me on for like an hour tops just to see how I work. It's not uncommon to do trials in the Hospitality industry- sometimes unpaid , sometimes I've been given $20-$50 for my time- but normally the unpaid ones are only 30 mins to 1 hour long.
Well... in this case, three and half hours passed and I was still there, and when I asked the boss how long she wanted me on for, she passive aggressively said "We're REALLY busy today but if you need to leave then leave."
Like... what???
She explicitly told me this was going to be an interview, but then proceeded to not interview me and instead make me work for what I'm assuming she expected to be the rest of the day?
I didn't want to be rude so I suggested I stay for another half-hour- and again, she didn't give me a chance to ask any questions earlier so I had no clue what was going through her mind or if she was going to pay me at this point. I was doing my best to try and be professional and get the job done, hoping to give a good impression.
Safe to say she didn't even offer to pay me, and the next day I get a rejection email from Seek. I'm pretty sure at this point that this lady wasn't actually looking for a team member, but for free labor.
Luckily I've now been offered a much better job- I start next Tuesday- and I guess for that reason, I'm wondering if it's worth chasing this woman up for not paying me. I don't need the money, but it would be nice to maybe prevent other people getting scammed into doing free work.
