Hi! So this is my first time going full on with job hunting so please excuse any naivety lol. I'm in university and my main goal right now is medical school and so I'm looking for experiences that will help me with applying.
About a month ago I applied to these two jobs. One was working with autistic children (no research involved) and the other was for being a research tech (not related to autism) at my university. I want to specialize in autism research so both jobs have their pros and cons.
I just got a call today from the former job telling me that they intend to send me an offer letter once I submit the formal application paperwork (yay!). A few minutes later, I receive an email for the latter job asking to meet next week for an interview.
To be honest, I'm leaning toward the research job because my previous experience working in a lab was super cool and I know that like 80-90% of medical school applicants have research experience. My problem is the uncertainty. I know that there are probably many other qualified individuals who also got moved to the next round and there is a good chance I would not get the position or that it turns out not to be the right fit for me.
I guess my question is how do I go about exploring this new opportunity without losing my offer with the first job? Should I fill out the paperwork now and then ask for time to consider once I get a formal offer? Should I tell them about me exploring other options? What if I need more than a week for the research job to get back to me about their decision? I just really don't want to end up with no options because I am hoping to move out and pay my own rent so that I can be on campus next semester. Thank you guys so much!
