Recruiters/hiring managers who get hundreds to thousands of apps per job listing - how do you process/review resumes at that scale?

Some people I've spoken to mention that there's no resume filtering/sorting going on, with some minor exceptions, while other people have mentioned that some ATS systems help with pre-screening.

Or is going through all those apps just part of the job?
