This might take a while, bear with me.
I was a government scientist for three years. Due to a desire to broaden my horizons, I decided to leave voluntarily and take a position with a private company. Unfortunately, it has only been three months and they let me go, partially citing COVID, but other reasons as well - I think I got replaced by someone much more qualified, and had the pleasure of them overhearing me get fired while they sat at my desk, working.
Moving right along, my old position is being flown and I am applying for it. They don't ask for a cover letter, but I would like to write one anyway - usually these job applications have a supplemental section where you have a set of questions that you write, submit, and they review.
What I want to know is this - do I mention my stint in the 3 month job in the cover letter? I go into a lot of detail of all the things I learned during that term in my resume (which was a LOT) so it's described there, but I can also easily write a cover letter about knowing the complete ins and outs of my old job, which clocks out to about one page.
I don't want to go on and on in an optional cover letter, but I am worried about not mentioning the previous job at all. Any advice would be helpful. The 3 month job trained me in a lot of stuff that would be applicable in more generic jobs, but this job was so specific that unfortunately most of my new skills wouldn't be used. Not too sure what to do here. Any advice would be appreciated.
