Cover Letter:
I recently came across the ORGANIZATION NAME while searching for positons relating to anti-trafficking and domestic/sexual abuse organizations. I became very intrigued with the position Domestic Violence Advocate and the work that ORGNAME does towards equal access and support for women of color. I am a New Mexico native with a passion for social justice for minorities. I am a first generation U.S. citizen and come from a background of immigrants. I have both personal and professional experience working with victims of domestic and sexual violence, specifically immigrants. As a recent graduate from the University of New Mexico, I would like to gain more experience while I work to meet my long-term goals of attending law school for immigration law and work for similar organizations as ORGNAME. During the summer of 2019, I interned as a victim advocate for the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center. I worked with immigrants that had been victims of domestic and sexual assault, human trafficking, and criminal violence. One of the biggest takeaways I took from this position is to be empathetic and not sympathetic and be a support system for these vulnerable populations. Working with immigrant victims has taught me the importance of equal access to legal, health, and social services. During my time at UNM, I had the opportunity of studying at the University of Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Not only did I learn to overcome language barriers, I quickly became aware of the cultural values. Meeting students from countries all over the world taught me that not all people share the same experiences and social customs that we do in the United States. I believe that having cultural awareness is essential in working with people of different social and cultural backgrounds.
