I’m a contract worker at a lab. I have a boss through my contractor who is basically my manager and in contact with my contracting company. But I also answer to another woman at the company we both work for. I started in Feb, but was laid off a bit for Covid. So far I have a decent track record. My boss/manager really likes me. However recently I was being trained on a new testing method. I have to qualify by doing the testing method a certain number of times in a row within a certain degree of error. I haven’t been doing well and there’s a lot of variability in my results. My boss suggested to me that I can basically cheat the test. He told me not to fake it entirely, but to kind of massage the results so that they seem less variable. He said that’s how he passed. The last 3 tests I did what he said and I made my results appear better. However I’m freaking out because my boss is not the one who will be looking at my results. Someone above us will and I’m afraid I made the results too good. Like possibly inhumanely good! Is there anything I can do? I don’t want to lose my job in the middle of a pandemic! I just got a new apartment and after 2 months of being laid off I don’t have much financial leeway. I’m terrified I’ll be found out! Should I come clean?? If they ask me about the results should I be honest or play dumb?? Am I just freaking out for nothing?
