Deaperate in every way to figure out how to stay at a job I hate for a manager who is frustrated at my performance.

I mostly need support and potentially advice if someone is going through the same thing. In March, I relicated and got a new job, leaving a very stable job but a pretty terrible team. I moved in with my partner and almost immediately started a new position while we all went into lockdown.

My new job has been fully remote and my manager meets with me once per week and explains repeatedly how frustrated she is that I am not meeting the roles’ expectations. I went through the roller coaster of working more, asking questions, not asking questions, trying new tactics, asking for input, getting feedback, managing up, etc. - truly this is my last ditch effort to try to figure out how to meet her expectations and keep my job. This is exhausting and draining because of COVID and new living situation, and full quarantine over here.

I am in Month 4, she wants me to excercise full tribal knowledge, more autonomy, taking on half the load so she can work on other things. Today she decided we would have a conversation on Thursday about what my game plan will be or whether or not this will work.

Would you game plan or join the unemployment ranks?

Let’s see if I can anticipate the clarifying questions: I work “in tech” but as a communications specialist. I have been miserable the whole time. Yes she is a bad manager, no there is no option for going to someone else to fix the situation, it is down to me and her. Yes I have applied to other jobs but realistically not expecting to magically land a job when no one else can. I have talked to one co worker about the whole thing and she was shocked and described it as abuse (the tone/language/feedback), but this is pretty standard at this company. I thought I was qualified for the role but I guess I am not. I need a paycheck so is it worth $5k a month? Today my partner was like “we have had this conversation for 3 months so I don’t know what to tell you.” We are so burnt out. 40-50 hours per week of work then never being good enough sucks. But I just moved here and got this job.
