Approaching your manager/company about working remote

Hi. I could use some advice.

I work for a large corporation. Our return to office (RTO) date was previously August 1st. Earlier this week, it was pushed back to February...2021. It has been pushed back 4 or 5 times now.

Permanent work from home (WFH) is rare in our department (but not unheard of), even though there is no reason that the job itself would ever require physical presence in the office. Pre-covid, many people WFH for a couple days per week. Everything can be done from a computer, no clients are involved, and productivity has actually increased since COVID began. People (typically more senior employees) are granted permanent WFH privileges on a case-by-case basis.

I would like to ask my manager if I could go permanent WFH. There is nothing tying me to the location where I currently live other than the physical need to go to my office, which won't arise again until February 2021 (if ever again). Me and my wife, who doesn't know anyone here in our current city and doesn't work, is isolated and lonely, and that's tough on her mental health and mine. If permanent WFH, then we could move back and be closer to my or her family.

Permanent WFH would immediately relieve our mental health and provide us with a great deal of flexibility moving forward, and I'd like to push the issue. But I'm a bit nervous to make this request, and am worried about doing something that would to put my current position in jeopardy. I don't want to give off the impression that I'm trying to bail on the job or company.

I want to get some advice on whether this would be a reasonable request to ask my manager, or whether I should hold off, grit my teeth, and accept living in this situation. I only started at the company 7 months ago and am still considered relatively new, which is one of the reasons I'm hesitant. I have good reviews. My manager and I are on good terms, but not particularly close. Given the uncertainties that COVID has added to the economy, I don't want to jeopardize in any way my job that supports me and my wife. However, I've been remote for 5 months now, and by February, it'll be 11 months working remote full time. To me, it's a remote job.

We really cannot take living here in isolation much longer and are desperate to get out. Any advice about approach strategies/chances of success/previous experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks!
