I have been recently offered the position of a Researcher in a Scandinavian think tank. The recruitment process had around seven steps and I cleared all of them was selected over another candidate in the last step. Sometime around the fourth step - the organisation HR sent a letter which gave an overview of the possible remuneration - it was clearly mentioned in the email that "all contracts are individually negotiated but this is what someone would typically make". It was also stated that there would be housing assistance "starting from 600$....".
I did not see a problem and I went ahead because it was obvious that the organisation was quoting the least that I could make as a professional. Post recruitment, I pointed out that housing assistance is exactly half of what the actual housing expenses are in the country. This was when conversation jumped from my accepting the position to suddenly the HR drawing up the contracts. I was a little sceptical here because I expected the HR to meet me over zoom once I accepted to make a final decision on the remuneration. I am not too bothered by the other sections of the pay scale but since housing is extremely expensive, I emailed asking if the housing assistance could be increased. The housing assistance mentioned is around 600$ but any single bedroom to the two-bedroom apartment would cost around 1200$. My issue here is that of the housing assistance is not increased then the additional housing expenses would be paid from the other sections of my salary and then the salary does not look very appealing overall.
I politely emailed the HR asking if that could be addressed, the HR emailed back offering 700$. I honestly felt a little upset at this reply because this was not a negotiation in good faith. I had politely pointed out that I will be moving to the country with my wife and it is not possible to live in a studio or rent one bedroom in a shared apartment.
Post the HR's 100$ increase offer - I sent an email detailing what my expenses could be and that it would be difficult to live in the country for a family of two. I am expecting a reply tomorrow. The problem here is that the think tank is an extremely prestigious one and I have a lot of scope to learn and contribute here. The HR knows that the market is in shambles and think tanks are hardly recruiting, so they have the leverage here. In my last email I have honestly stated that from the remuneration package that they have offered, I would at the least require a 20% increase.
I have probably played my cards wrong but I really needed the job at this point of time and it is honestly an impressive place to work. If the HR again throws peanuts at me - should I again try to engage and push for a higher salary or should I just go ahead and bite the bullet and make sure that I bargain well in my next job change. I am a little scared that I might push too much and then lose the offer but honestly, it would be really difficult to live in the country without that 20% increase.
