I'm a college student looking for a summer job. I recently interviewed at two different jobs - one as a Starbucks barista and the other as a grocery store cashier - and I was accepted to both. Going through the background check process right now (should be clean as a whistle) so I have some time to buy until then before I have to accept/decline. Barista job will pay on average about $10 per hour in my city, though it could range anywhere between $9 to $11. Grocery store will pay $13.50 per hour. Did a quick calculation with the number of hours I set to work per week and the week I'm willing to work up to and I will make about $300 less with the barista job (only taking about 80% of what I earn to make room for taxes).
Thing is, I definitely clicked more with the interviewer at Starbucks. Lots of young people and I really love coffee, which was a plus. Environment seemed chill but still high energy, and in my interview we talked a lot about the importance of making mistakes, asking questions, and learning on the job, things that I value in a work place (and also customer service but that goes between both of these jobs). Interview at the grocery store was more built around customer service but not much else. My interviewer at the grocery store also seemed reluctant at first when I mentioned that I attend university in a different city and told me that they weren't really hiring for short-term employment (but they did end up hiring me anyways). My interviewer at the grocery store also really pushed and prodded for me to extend my availability (the hours I set were arbitrary, but I went from being available from between 6 am to 2 pm on Sundays to 6 am to 9 pm on Sundays), whereas Starbucks accepted my availability with no adjustment (albeit the hours I put were also the hours they needed people the most).
So, how do I go about choosing between these two jobs? Being a college student, I really appreciate the extra money, but I'm also hesitant to step into a higher-paying job that I felt raised some red flags. Again, this is just a summer job so it's not life-changing or anything, but I'm still inexperienced with how to go about this.
