Aren’t college jobs more game playing than work?

I’m in college but seriously thinking about a trade. I don’t “network” because I think it’s dishonest. I’m not going to tell a potential boss, “yes, I’d be an excellent asset for your tremendous company” when I don’t think I would be. It seems like in the trades, you work. It’s hard work and you get wore out. Sometimes you get yelled at. But you’re not always trying to suck up to “climb the ladder.” And it seems like college work is hard to measure. You can make a spreadsheet but then somebody else will probably take credit for it. If you’re laying bricks, your boss will yell at you to do it faster or better. But he knows you’re doing it. It just seems like college jobs are mostly game playing. You suck up as much as you actually work. Is that true?
