Is it bad that I’m not telling my current employer about my job search?

I’m feeling a little bit guilty about the fact that I’ll likely be leaving my current job of nine years go to somewhere with less drama and better pay without telling them I’ve been searching for a new job for the last few months.

The main reason I’m keeping it quiet is because I may get into trouble or on bad terms with the kitchen managers/bosses. They have a habit of making the lives of people they’re not fond of very difficult for the fun of it; I’ve seen it many times and they do stuff like that for laughs. Quite a toxic work environment.

I also don’t want them to know in case they “let me go” because of it because I’m not entirely sure if my new job is a sure thing yet. I’d also like the opportunity to come back if things don’t work out at the new job (I’m almost positive me leaving would be a pretty big blow, due to the fact that I can work every station and many others can’t/won’t. Not trying to sound pretentious, but it’s one of the main reasons the job is way more stressful than it is).

It’s a tough situation, and I’m wondering if it’s frowned upon to not let your current employer know that you’re searching for a job.
