Boss wanting me to come back to work even though I’ve lost a family member

I called in sick today, because my grandmother was in the hospital and literally dying... Since my boss couldn’t find someone to cover my entire shift, but only the first couple of hours, he wanted me to return to work (it’s a service-related job) and cover the rest of the shift. When he suggested it I thought it was fine, because I then would have the chance to think about something else, but while in work I was thinking a lot about how careless someone must be, to make someone return to work, even though they’ve lost a family member. This doesn’t seem normal (it’s the first time I’ve lost someone while having a job), but is it the norm?
