I had a second interview today for a position in my field, similar to, but not exactly what I’m doing now. The interview was over the phone with my potential direct boss and the COO of the company. I don’t want to give out many more details because paranoid, but the interview was awkward to say the least.
The COO would leave long pauses after I’d spoken, not 3-5 second phone lag time but closer to 10!!! seconds and would give a one word response like “okay” or “got it” to my responses before moving on to the next generic question. He did ask some in depth questions about people we mutually knew in our field like “what would X say about you if I called them right now?” And I found it slightly off putting the way they were asked.
This role would be a lateral move for me (middle management) with the potential to move into upper management in a couple of years. I don’t know if I should write off this weird feeling I have after the interview to the COO being off his game with it being a phone interview at 5pm on a Friday after a holiday, or if I should take this as a red flag. Anyone been in similar situations? Am I reading too much into my first impression of this man?
TLDR: I didn’t have great rapport with the COO of a company I’m interviewing with and hoping to advance into upper management with, is that a deal breaker?
