So I just did a phone interview a few days ago, needless to say, I bombed it. I asked the interviewer “how are you” twice.
I lack social skills mainly because I don’t really care to talk to people and I’m just naturally a painfully shy introvert. I never know what to say when I meet people unless if they do all the talking and questioning, and I answer. I suck at small talks, I feel like I would mess up even if a cashier says “hi, how are you”. I rehearse myself prior to making any important phone calls or asking questions.
They said “you got this, just don’t get too nervous”, I believed them and decided to just answer the call naturally instead of rehearsing what I would say. But the thing is, I can’t rehearse for something I’ve never really done before...
How do I better prepare myself for phone calls? I got so nervous that I said “good morning” even though it was already 1:30pm. I ended the call with a short “thank you” and a ton of awkward silence in between because the interviewer perhaps expected me to say more.
Are there filler statements to say besides “okay, absolutely, yes, definitely” because that’s all I could muster up at that moment. I feel like I choked and made the call so awkward.
