Graduated with a Masters of Science in city planning with a merit in the UK in august. Been applying for jobs since november 2018 while still doing my course. I have only had 2 interviews and the rest were unsuccessful and got a rejection email or no response. i have been applying in positions in edinburgh, glasgow and london both public and private sector.
I just don't know where my applications have gone wrong or how to improve them. I think my answering of why i want to work there could be more specific but also i feel like at this point of applying everywhere i just want to work somewhere that coming up with something tailored gets more and more difficult especially as I still am not set one a specific part of planning hence applying for a wide range of companies. My work experience is not planning related and also not in the UK as although i am a british citizen my family lives in HK and so I spent holidays there between undergraduate years. Also I did my undergraduate degree in geography in Canada. - could the fact that these work experiences are no planning related or in the UK be a factor of why I am not getting to the interview rounds? I do try and put in my cover letters that I feel that my international background and mixed work experience is what sets me apart and that the diverse background helps me adapt and has allowed me to hone on my skills and apply them to different contexts...
I am open to any advice on cover letters and how to tailor them well to both public and private sector graduate planning positions. Also should I add more on my international background? maybe explain why I want to work in the UK and why my previous roles are all in HK... as I never really put the fact that my family lives in HK and that I am from HK...
