I've been at a small job working in a pub as a chef for nearly 6 months, whilst only being 21 I'm still new to the game. I was made alot of false promises in the interview stages and found that over time my manager was becoming more and more of a bully to me. I'd never signed a contract or was given a contract at this job and when queried with staff they said it was normal for a small pub (I understand this to be illegal). They reassured me that there was never a problem with contracts with staff before and I wasn't too bothered about this job anyway. The bullying and the treatment has become too much for me and by the support and advice given by family and friends they've told me to 'Quit' tomorrow, hand in a notice of immediate effect and forget about them. The question is that I'm reading on the Internet it's illegal to resign with immediate effect in the UK but if there's no contract than 1 week is courteous. Can I still be within my own rights to just walk in quit and walk out? The after effects don't concern me, as my family are looking at starting their own business and I have good references from other jobs. I just want to be able to cut ties completely with them now and go separate ways as the manager has caused me so many problems. Advice on how to word the immediate resignation letter would be great too Thank you
