I am currently working at my first job after college. I took the job because the description sounded great! Once I started working I realized why turnover is so high. They basically did a bait & switch on me. I was supposed to be an assistant but I am functioning as a lead teacher but with assistant pay which is about $15,000 less. No one ever told me about the switch and during the interview they specifically said I couldn’t apply for the lead position because I was not qualified. I have about 5+ major responsibilities that I was not prepared for. I’m not afraid of working hard but I have 0 support. I show up at 6:30 and leave at 6:30 and then work at home from about 7:30-11 or 12. (I know this is normal for teachers but I also wasn’t expecting to be the main teacher) All I feel at work is anxious & miserable because leadership is constantly watching and telling us all the things we do poorly (positive feedback is irrelevant). The only thing that has kept me going are my coworkers who are also new. There’s solidarity in misery.
I also teach special needs children and I have to write reports on the kids that are given to the department of special education and help determine the student’s IEPs. It feels irresponsible to assign 4 brand new teachers with no experience or training in education to teach these kids and influence their accommodations.
I’ve wanted to quit since August 23rd but I felt bad about quitting the day before school starts and leaving my brand new co teacher in a shitty situation. I also TRIED to like this job, but every day it’s worse.
I am struggling with going through with quitting because it’s inconvenient for the children & parents but I can feel my health worsening daily. I’m wondering what the best way to quit is? What would make it easier for my kids and coworkers? I feel shitty leaving mid year but I just can’t imagine another day let alone 8 more months.
