I was recommended and recruited for a job, moved through the interview process at lightning speed, and now have to wait at least a month to know my fate - is this kind of weird?

Hey Reddit - chronic over thinker here so let’s stew together!

My profile - I work in fundraising at a library in a major metro area in the US. I’m slightly fresh out of college and am working towards my Masters right now, but I worked all throughout college in my field and have had no trouble securing jobs.

About two weeks, a colleague of mine - let’s call her Sally - who is leaving our workplace soon invited me to chat over coffee. Sally let me know that she was having a call that day with the director of an academic library at a university very close to where I live (I’m a commuter). Let’s call this guy Dave. Sally said she was recommended to Dave by the former Director of our library for an Executive Assistant role they are hiring for. However, she is moving too far for it to be a reasonable commute and she wanted to recommend me to Dave instead. She thought it would be a great fit for me and it would be closer to where I live. Plus, the library had been hiring for this role for at least two months and were getting desperate, so my odds seemed pretty good.

After agreeing, Sally passed on my resume to Dave. Despite being on a European vacation, Dave emailed me the next day and said I am “a very well suited candidate” for the role and “likely at a higher [pay] grade as well.” He wants me to chat with his #2 guy, Chuck, as soon as possible so we can have my interview shortly after he returns from vacation.

3 days later, I have my phone interview with Chuck and it went really well - I was doing most of the asking as he didn’t feel like he needed to clarify about my qualifications for this particular role. Chuck does at the end of this chat ask that I apply formally through the university’s website before we can move forward - which struck me as a little odd, given what I’ve gathered about being recruited. I do submit my application that night though and within a couple of days, I receive an email from Chuck scheduling a multi-hour, in person interview for the following week.

I had my in-person interview this past Friday and I feel pretty confident about my performance. I bring a lot of experience in fundraising and working with nonprofit boards that they really want, but did not emphasize much in the job description, which makes me think I’ve got an edge on the competition. I had a great chat with Dave as well and I think we would have a solid working relationship. And the interview included all the classic signals that made me think I’ve totally nailed it - we went on a tour and met a lot of random staff, they started switching “you would” with “you will,” the interview ran long, I had a good gut feeling, etc.

At the end of the interview, I asked Chuck about the next steps. He said they were going to be interviewing a couple more people in the coming weeks and they should come to a final decision in at least a month’s time. This left me quite surprised, as I felt like I’d been on the fast track during this whole process, just to hit a wall. I was also surprised to hear they were interviewing other people, especially since it had been reiterated to me by both Sally and Chuck that they desperately need someone in this role and the hiring process has gone on for too long.

Reddit - what are your thoughts? Am I overthinking this? Is this a normal timeline for something like this or is this kind of weird? I appreciate anything that will soothe my anxious thoughts!
