My friend has a question about a job offer and i was hoping someone could offer advice!
Basically the offer is less than he said he wanted in the phone screen, they haven't given him specifics on health insurance, the PTO sounds not great, and he has another interview soon with a different company but doesn't want to lose this offer.
Details: During his phone screen with 'company A' he told HR he was wanting 95K base (knowing there was bonus potential). Got an offer yesterday, 80K so 15 K less than he wanted, still with bonus potential. He wonders if it is worth trying to negotiate or if they likely won't come up more? Why would they offer him so much less than what he told them at the beginning? They said on the phone if he makes all the bonus that would be close to the 95K he originally asked for, but it's not a sure thing. Also, the PTO isn't great, 2 weeks including sick time. Do companies ever go higher on salary and PTO (esp large companies) or is it typically one or the other?
Also, is it OK for him to ask for specifics on health insurance, like the premium cost, deductible and network at this stage? It is the hiring manager he is dealing with, not HR, and are these things OK to ask for some clarification on from the hiring mgr or do you not find out this stuff until your first day typically?
He also has an interview coming up with a different company, 'Company B'. 'Company A' will only wait a couple of days, but that might be too fast for company B to make an offer. any advice on that? He is interested in company A for the unique experience and the work sounds interesting while company B might be able to go higher on salary. is it worth asking company A to wait one more day while also trying to negotiate on salary and PTO with company A?
My friend is really not sure what to do here, or how to negotiate, any advice would be appreciated!
