Hi! I’m a 19 year old college student, so excuse my ignorance. I’ve lived in bigger towns my entire life, with populations of about ~20,000 people everywhere I’ve worked. Along with that, I’ve only ever worked for big chain companies.
Recently, I’ve moved in with my dad due to unexpected life circumstances. We live out, to put it nicely, in the absolute middle of nowhere in the Midwest. The closest town is 15 minutes away with a population of about 2,000.
My current job as a pharmacy tech, which I’ll be keeping for the time being, is roughly 65 minutes away. This is certainly not ideal, at all. I don’t want to be driving over an hour each day to work at a job I don’t care about for two shifts a week while I’m in school. I’ve decided to job search in the nearby town and I’m hoping to get another job as a pharmacy tech if possible. There’s two pharmacies in the new town, but none of them have any online applications or information for prospective employees because they’re so small.
What’s the most polite way to inquire about working in these places? Is it odd to ask small businesses if they’re hiring? Should I just bring in a copy of my resume and ask them to contact me if they need additional help? I don’t want to make any mistakes or seem incompetent.
Tl;dr- possible stupid millennial question, how do I go about asking a place if they’re hiring if they don’t post on job boards or have online applications?
Edit: To make it clear, I plan to job search other industries as well, including some from the same town that DO have job postings online. I just enjoy being a tech and would like to continue being one, I just can’t justify the drive and wear on my car. The closest branch of the pharmacy I currently work at is 40 minutes away opposed to 65, but still isn’t great.
