Some history: From 2013 to October 2018 I worked with a small private security company working my way up until I was an Operations Assistant. I originally took this job because I needed an income while I went to school, but I graduated in 2016 and didn't want to pursue a job in my degree field. I thought I would stick it out with this security company because they kept promoting me but I soon grew miserable working for them. This resulted in me making some mistakes that would have led to me being terminated if I hadn't put in my letter of resignation first.
I work retail part-time now and have been with this same store for about six months. I've actually been looking for a new job since before I resigned from my previous job, and despite scheduling a few interviews here and there, no one has hired me. I know I don't have a good reference from this security company, but I do have experience working in an office and am trying to find a job where I would be able to utilize those same skills.
I have also been considering going back to school this fall to become a dental hygienist (which is perhaps the opposite of my physical science degree)...
I guess my questions are:
Do I include these 5 years with this company on my resume even though I don't have a good reference?
If no, how do I account for these 5 years and/or my office experience on my resume?
If I'm applying to minimum wage jobs for additional references, do I include my degree on my resume?
How do I market myself to potential employers if going back to school doesn't work out?
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated, as I'm feeling really overwhelmed right now. I know I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what. Luckily I have some family that lets me stay with them, but I really want to be able to take care of myself. Thank you in advance.
