I've been looking for a job since I was laid off a few weeks ago. I received an offer yesterday contingent on a background check, which is through an outsourced company called CareerBuilder Employment.
I'm really stressed out right now because 4 years ago I was fired from a job. I made a really bad comment about the company (allegedly- they said I made a comment on social media which honestly did not sound like something I would have said and when they fired me, they couldn't provide proof via screenshot or anything that I actually said it. They couldn't even produce it during an unemployment benefits appeal call- they just said "it was around here somewhere". Day of my firing they just said they had to part ways and I didn't know what to do so I just left and found a job 6 weeks later and moved on)
I've held 2 positions since then that will give great references. But I'm really worried about being fired getting uncovered. I always listed resigned as my reasoning because when I would say I was fired in interviews I never got the job. During this background check, it didn't ask for details. It also listed NA under "Can we contact this employer" because Yes/No wasn't an option unless you selected that it was a current job. And when you dig into the company, it says they contact HR AND the supervisor for an 'informal non-HR interview" where they ask about the employee including why they were terminated.
After I was fired I asked around the company for references and was told the HR director forbid anyone but HR from giving references but she's no longer there so I don't know the rules. I'm so stressed out that I will lose this opportunity now I can't sleep, it's all I am thinking about.
