Should I take a pay cut to work for a potentially better company?

I have the opportunity to work for a different, more established, company doing more or less what I do now. However this new position would be a contract one with about a 20% pay cut. And since it's a contract position, I'd be losing benefits that I currently have such as paid time off, holidays, etc. There's the possiblity that they may hire me permanently after about a year, which is very much my goal, but it's only a possibility.

I don't dislike my current job all that much but I have a very dim view of my current company. I'm expecting the new job would have better management and a better work-life balance based on what I've heard from past and present employees.

At the same time, I did the indefinite temp-to-hire thing at the start of my current position and I'm not eager to go back. If it drags on I know that I'll only come to resent it as I work alongside people with better pay and benefits doing the exact same job.

What would guys recommend? I can live off of either wage though the smaller one obviously cuts into the rate with which I had planned to save and pay off debt.
