I've been with my current firm for almost 16 years. Worked my way up from CAD draftsman to licensed civil PE last year. Since I've become licensed, the headhunters have come out of the woodwork. I'd been politely declining until the start of the new year, when I decided to take a look and see what was out there, specifically in larger cities of the state, as we'd prefer to move out of the small town we live in currently.
After about a dozen interviews and second interviews, I received two very solid offers that offered substantial pay increases, and narrowed that down to the one firm I felt would be a better fit. Responsibilities would be about the same as my current job. Offer letter received, signed and returned. Now the hard part..
Turned in my resignation and had a frank conversation with the president of the company (we're very flat, no middle management, etc). He accepted my resignation letter but asked if we could meet the next day. The next day we discussed the counter offer in detail, including what would be the opportunity to be the head of a new division in our office located in one of the larger cities in the state. The raise, however, would only be slightly more than what the other firm is offering.
It appears to me that these offers are nearly identical. The big differences I see are:
- Lower ceiling / higher floor: Taking this raise at my current firm likely makes it difficult to expect any sort of substantial raise over the next few years, even if I absolutely crush the new role. Meanwhile, the other firm's compensation is likely to surpass my current firm's within a year's time, two at most, and with substantially less responsibility.
- Health insurance: Current firm is a much smaller firm, so the health insurance deductibles are ridiculously high, 10k out of pocket for the individual, 30k for the family. The new firm is much larger, so the deductibles are a much more manageable amount, 2500 / 5000.
As you've probably guessed if you've read this far, I'm torn. Am I missing something obvious?
