Hi y’all. I’m a Rutgers Business School Marketing grad. I graduated Summa Cum Laude in the top 10% of my graduating class. I have been working a marketing internship for the past 5 months at a small family owned company in Northern NJ for minimum wage. I did social media marketing, influencer marketing, copywriting (for Amazon / social media / ads / etc) , and helped with creative direction on content & ads.
They offered me a part time job as a marketing Assistant for 20 hours a week minimum for $25. My manager said the hours could “quickly go up” “potentially to a full time position” I told them I would think about it.
So many people in my life think I should be grateful just take it. But after tax in NJ the take home pay is $1648 a month, minus the cost of my son’s daycare it would be $413 to $708 a month, depending if I put my son in 3 or 4 days (I got an IUD recently so hopefully no more babies for us until he’s in Kindergarten.)
My husband works for full time his family trucking company, and makes about $2300 a month there bc his dad is cheap as f, but works real estate on night weekends. On paper, his salary is about $85k, bc he would receive about $50k in commissions in real estate in a good year. However, he is so burnt out of doing both, he might quit one or other. His dad is waving the ownership of the company over him, which makes at least $1-3m in Revenue annually. However, his dad will likely never retire. Even with his heart problems, he’s only 70. We live with my MIL in her house that is paid off, but we pay $2200 a month in taxes alone.
Back to the question though, should I accept this offer & look for another job in the mean time? I tried to negotiate but the CEO wouldn’t budge. Or should I keep it in the mean time so I am bringing in some money while I look for another job? If so, what would be an acceptable starting salary for a starting marketing position in northern NJ or NYC? I’ve seen $45-55k is acceptable right now.
